Signs Your Inner Child (or Theirs) Needs Healing

How do you recognize when the Inner Child is running the show? Here are some of the most common signs I’ve seen over the years, in both my clients and their counterparts:

  • Difficulty regulating emotions: If you find yourself (or notice your Twin) swinging between anger, sadness, or fear, often out of proportion to the situation, it’s a sign the Inner Child is in distress.

  • Negative self-talk: Thoughts like “I’m not good enough,” constant self-blame, or secretly expecting rejection are usually rooted in childhood experiences of criticism or neglect. For Twin Flames, this shows up as running or pulling back right as closeness deepens.

  • Difficulty with intimacy: Struggling to let someone in—even someone you deeply love—is a strong sign of Inner Child fear. Twins often cycle into separation because vulnerability feels unsafe.

  • Compulsive coping: Turning to substances, workaholism, “serial conquests,” or addictive behaviors often masks the Inner Child’s pain. On the surface it looks like avoidance; at the root it’s fear of being unloved or abandoned.

In your counterpart, it may appear as:

  • Negative communication patterns: Criticism, blame, or shutting down instead of expressing needs.

  • Fear of commitment: Promising closeness but withdrawing when it gets too real.

  • Testing behaviors: Pushing you away to see if you’ll come back, or creating conflict as a way of self-protection.

  • Reckless behavior: Using short-term distractions or escapism to avoid deeper intimacy.

These are not “bad traits.”

They are survival strategies the Inner Child learned long ago.

The encouraging part? They can heal.


What Happens When the Inner Child Heals?

1) Softer Attachment and Openness

The way we connect as adults is rooted in our earliest years. Fear of commitment, hot-and-cold cycles, and separation soften as the Inner Child feels safe to trust again.

2) Old Wounds Release

Critical parents, neglect, or feeling invisible in childhood often show up in adult love as fear of rejection. Healing brings relief: your nervous system finally recognizes love as safe.

3) Toxic Cycles Unwind

Behaviors like manipulation, testing, or distancing are protective patterns. When the Inner Child is met with love, those patterns no longer serve a purpose. What remains is the authentic desire for closeness.

4) Heart Walls Come Down
